 From the February 2002 Disabilities newsletter.The Internet offers many resources on behavioral support and school discipline for children with disabilities. The following is a rundown of the most well-known sites and what they offer: The Center for Effective Collaboration and Practice: The Center's goal is to foster collaboration at the federal, state, and local levels to help children who have or who are at risk for serious emotional disorders. Their site contains information on functional behavioral assessment, early intervention, school violence, children's mental health, and more. The Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders: The CCBD, a division of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), seeks to promote and facilitate the education and general welfare of children with emotional or behavioral disorders through awareness, advocacy, and professional support. Their site features a message board for parents and educators seeking information on managing with challenging behaviors. You can purchase their publications and read their quarterly newsletter online. The OSEP Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports: The Center was established by OSEP to provide schools with information and assistance on positive behavioral support and school-wide disciplinary interventions. You can find detailed information on functional assessment and classroom, individual, and school-wide PBS. Rehabilitation, Research & Training Center on Positive Behavioral Support: The Center is a national research and training effort dedicated to disseminating research-based information to improve support for people with disabilities and challenging behavior. The site offers detailed information on PBS and guidelines for best practices. |
