Maria Murray

Maria S. Murray, M.S., is a Learning Disabilities Specialist at Syracuse University. She is a doctoral candidate in reading education studying the invented spellings of young children. Her research interests revolve around early reading intervention, especially for children most at risk for reading failure. Ms. Murray has worked for many years as a private tutor for students with reading difficulties, often using the Road to the Code manual. She presents numerous Road to the Code seminars, as well as other teacher workshops regarding phonological awareness and early intervention. In addition, Ms. Murray is project coordinator for a large Interagency Education Research Initiative (IERI) grant, which is investigating the impact of classroom-based early reading intervention for kindergarten and first grade children. One of her roles on this grant is the professional development of teachers who are using Road to the Code. Ms. Murray has served as adjunct professor for Syracuse University's clinic titled Advanced Literacy Intervention, where graduate students provide research-based intervention to children with reading difficulties. She has also worked as a tutor and eventually project director on an early intervention grant funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). While working on that project, she assisted in the production of When Stars Read, an NICHD film highlighting early reading intervention.
