Seminar Description

book cover
Students of any age can become better readers by acquiring critical decoding and spelling skills. In this workshop, participants will discover an innovative, comprehensive curriculum — based on word origin and word structure — for teaching decoding and spelling to students from K–12. Participants will learn about
  • the rationale for explicit decoding/spelling instruction

  • the prerequisites for reading acquisition, including phonemic awareness

  • the structure of English orthography

  • Anglo-Saxon letter-sound correspondences, syllable patterns, and affixes,

  • advanced language structures, including Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, and roots

To incorporate this knowledge into their reading instruction, participants will also learn practical, multisensory teaching strategies; easy-to-implement activities for individual, small-group, and inclusive classroom settings; and content area connections in literature and social studies. The two-day seminar includes more details and hands-on activities.

Bonus: Let us know who your participants will be, and Dr. Henry will emphasize the Anglo-Saxon layer of language for primary school teachers or the Latin and Greek layers for upper elementary and secondary school teachers!
