Seminar Description

This seminar begins with Autism and Inclusion, a 1–3 day presentation that teaches participants practical strategies for supporting students with autism spectrum disorders within a general education classroom. Participants will discover the importance of moving beyond participation in inclusion and understanding every student as a complex, capable learner. The speaker defines autism and addresses topics such as
  • listening to the voices of students with autism

  • facilitating inclusive schooling

  • supporting student movement

  • making the classroom comfortable for students with sensory differences

  • enhancing student communication and respecting diversity in communication

  • supporting behaviors in positive and sensitive ways

With 2- and 3-day presentations of Autism and Inclusion, participants have more time to ask questions, work in teams, and share ideas for working with individual students with autism.

Autism and Inclusion may comprise the entire presentation or be supplemented by presentations on any or all of the following options:

Differentiated Instruction/Inclusive Pedagogy (1–2 days): This presentation focuses on planning lessons in a diverse inclusive classroom. Participants will learn how to modify curricula, assessment, and instruction for students with a range of disabilities, abilities, gifts, needs, challenges, and skills. Cooperative and active learning structures also will be introduced.

Access to Academics: Challenging All Learners in the Inclusive Classroom (1 day): This presentation addresses giving students with disabilities access to literacy experiences, arranging their participation in academic clubs, and considering their enrollment in challenging courses. Participants will discuss effective ways to create changes in curricula and instruction to make schooling meaningful and challenging for students with a range of abilities and needs
