Seminar Description

Temperament, or a child's unique behavioral style, plays a large role in determining his or her reactions. Because each child approaches the world in a different way, learning about temperament is vital to understanding child development and behavior.
  • In this seminar, you' ll get a primer on temperament and discover how to use your new knowledge to improve your interactions with children and respond more effectively to their challenging behaviors. You' ll explore

  • the basics of temperament (this overview can be accompanied by a more specific section for certain audiences)
  • ways temperament affects development, learning, socialization, emotion regulation, and the development of behavior problems
  • temperament issues in infancy, early and middle childhood, and adolescence
  • interactions between temperament and the environment in such areas as parenting, education, childcare, therapy, and healthcare.
  • specific temperament traits and how they affect behavior
  • different ways to assess temperament
  • challenging behaviors most likely to occur in children with particular temperaments
  • temperament strategies to work with challenging behavior

Additional information is presented for specific audiences:

Healthcare providers learn about research in healthcare and temperament, temperament and medical conditions, and temperament in pediatrics. Participants will learn to assess temperament in the medical setting, care for individuals of different temperaments, and set up a temperament program to fit their healthcare setting.

Educators and childcare providers explore temperament in the classroom, different learning styles, and teacher temperament. The seminar addresses how temperament can affect their student’s learning disabilities, challenging behaviors, and peer interactions. Participants will leave the seminar with practical classroom strategies for addressing temperament and creating a classroom that fits children of all temperaments.

Parent educators examine temperament counseling with parents and creating a good fit between parent and child. They’ll learn about different temperament programs: individual counseling, temperament-based parenting classes, and parenting groups. The seminar prepares participants to assess temperament, provide temperament information to parents, and set up a temperament parenting program.

Psychotherapists learn how temperament can be used within therapy and how it can affect behavior problems. The seminar addresses working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. In addition, the speaker and participants discuss working with temperament counselors, creating “goodness of fit,” and concerns that go beyond temperament.
