Seminar Description

Resilience, or competence, helps children succeed in difficult circumstances, cope with stress and challenges, and survive with courage in extreme adversity. A child’s resilience is influenced not only by intelligence, but also by many different aspects of emotional and social development — aspects caregivers and professionals can actively foster to put their child on the pathway to a happy and productive life.

In this seminar, participants will discover specific ways to promote resilience or competence in young children. Dr. Landy defines and describes different competencies children should develop, such as self-esteem, play and imagination, secure attachments with caregivers, problem solving, emotion regulation, behavioral control, and social competence and caring. Participants will learn

  • how the competencies typically develop

  • what contributes to their development, according to important research

  • how to encourage development of the competencies in children

  • how to work with parents individually and in groups to help them understand each competency and how to encourage it in themselves and their children

Following the seminar, participants will be able to

  • determine whether each competency is developing appropriately in individual children

  • use a variety of strategies with children to encourage development of the competencies

  • write reports for caregivers suggesting specific ways to assist their children’s emotional and social development

  • provide workshops and instruction on different competencies for both professionals and caregivers
