Seminar Description

Designing individual education plans (IEPs) for children with special needs isn’t always easy. When school personnel and parents bring their different ideas and feelings to the table, conflicts can often interfere with successful planning. This exciting two-day seminar can help! Participants will learn specific strategies for preventing and resolving conflicts during IEP meetings, and they’ll discover how to form strong, respectful partnerships with other team members while achieving decision-making by consensus. “Hands-on” experience, supported by personal reflection, individualized attention, and specific feedback, make this seminar the key to stronger teams, smoother meetings and better IEPs.

On the first day, participants examine aspects of effective team management. Through PowerPoint® presentations and structured exercises, the participants learn how to

  • recognize and meaningfully address the 12 standard parent complaints

  • understand characteristics of the ideal IEP member, team and meeting

  • achieve consensus-based decisions through principled negotiation

  • identify and handle the “show stoppers” that threaten successful IEP meetings

On the second day, participants deepen their understanding of the psychological and emotional aspects of the IEP team and learn how to promote team harmony and success. Topics include

  • “behavior trains” and “power points”

  • four keys to effective communication

  • the triad of conflict resolution

  • 25 specific techniques for conflict prevention and resolution

Before the end of the seminar, participants also develop personal action plans to ensure carry-over of new skills and insights to help them make a real difference in their own IEP teams. This seminar has been offered nationwide for both parents and school staff, with hundreds of school professionals participating thus far.

Bonus: Mr. Martin is now offering a new seminar on successful "resolution sessions," as per the recent reauthorization of IDEA. This seminar covers the latest requirements pertaining to conflict resolution, due process hearing issues and trends, potential pitfalls within the new law, making the best use of attorneys, handling impasse, writing durable agreements, and much more.
