Seminar Description

Drawing from her own experiences as the sister of a man with cerebral palsy and mental retardation, Mary McHugh addresses the issues that siblings of children with disabilities may face throughout their lives. Participants in this seminar will explore how a sibling’s childhood and later life may be affected by factors like birth order, the way they adjust to their sibling with a disability, and the role their sibling plays in their life. The seminar also covers such specific issues as
  • what brothers and sisters of children with disabilities need from their parents

  • how having a sibling with a disability may affect the child’s or adult’s social and professional relationships

  • what supports are available for siblings in distress

  • how career options for the sibling without disabilities are affected

  • how families can plan together for the future of the child with a disability

Through this seminar, parents, siblings, and professionals who work with families of people with disabilities will be better equipped to understand and triumph over the challenges they may encounter.
