Seminar Description
The speaker discusses the layers of the English language and explains how those layers combine to form words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. The speaker also quizzes participants’ current language knowledge and then fills in the gaps with an overview of phonetics, phonology, morphology, orthography, and word history. Participants will learn how these topics at the word level fit into structured language instruction.
Following this seminar, participants will be able to
- determine student needs by analyzing their spelling, writing, and reading from a linguistic perspective
- describe the different levels that comprise structured language instruction
- understand the importance of phonological awareness and phonics instruction
- identify several rule-based correspondence patterns between speech and print
- analyze word structure at the phoneme, grapheme, syllable, and morpheme levels
- perform a simple phonetic transcription of some English words using consonant and vowel charts
- understand what a morpheme is and different word building forms (compounding, combining form, and adding affixes to Latin roots)
Extended Seminar
The extended seminar (3-5 days) provides the conceptual basis for teaching with a variety of multisensory and structured methods and emphasizes the complex relationship between oral and written language between speech and print. The speakers show how this information can be applied to understanding reading and spelling development, interpreting student errors, and planning instruction. Participants
- gain a working knowledge of phonetics, phonology, morphology, and orthography
- acquire a foundational knowlege for effective teaching of reading
- develop an understanding of language at the sound, syllable, and word level
