Seminar Description
Dr. Naseef presents the information necessary for developing and maintaining an emotionally healthy family when the family includes a child with disabilities. Topics covered include collaborating with professionals, the special needs of fathers, issues facing siblings, working as a couple to raise a child with special needs, reducing stress, and managing difficult behavior. Seminars can be built from the six half-day workshops listed below or workshops can be condensed to give an overview of more topics.
- Understanding and Guiding Your Child's Behavior
This workshop addresses the challenging behaviors that children exhibit and shows how to guide them toward more socially appropriate ways of self-expression. Participants also explore practical behavioral approaches to common regulatory issues including eating, sleeping, and toilet-training. As an added bonus for weary caregivers, Dr. Naseef provides stress-management strategies.
- Stress Busters: When Your Child Has Special Needs
Stressed out? Dr. Naseef presents basic stress reduction techniques and explains the emotional impact that caring for a child with a disability has on the body. Parents will learn how to identify stressors and get in touch with their feelings.
- The Father Factor: Understanding the Special Needs of Fathers
This workshop explores the unique perspective that men bring to parenting a child with special needs. Dr. Naseef presents a slide show of his own son growing up to illustrate common challenges and evoke discussion. Participants are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings within a structured format.
- Issues Facing Siblings of Children with Disabilities
Parents often wonder how raising a child with disabilities affects their other children. In this workshop, parents will explore their own sibling relationships in order to understand the impact of their childs special needs on his or her more typical brothers and sisters. Participants will learn strategies for meeting family members needs while maintaining household unity and stability.
- First Aid For Your Relationship: When You're Raising a Child With Special Needs
This workshop examines the different perspectives that men and women bring to parenting a child with special needs. Dr. Naseef guides caregivers through experiential exercises that show them how to listen and understand each other in new waysand work together to strengthen their relationship.
- Special Children, Challenged Parents, Caring Professionals: Building Links That Endure
This workshop shows how to strengthen the parent-professional relationship and work together more effectively. Drawing from his personal and clinical experiences, Dr. Naseef offers guidance on the emotional and developmental challenges both special children and their parents may encounter. Professionals and parents will investigate the roadblocks to collaboration as well as strategies to overcome those difficulties.
