Summer Reading Recommendations

From Toni W. Linder, Ed.D.

Biscuit's Day at the Beach, by Alyssa Capucilli, Harper Collins, 2001

This is a board book appropriate for toddlers and early preschoolers. It includes a little girl, her puppy, her kitten, their picnic, and fun in the wading pool and the sandbox. Since many children will be involved in these activities during the summer, the book can be used to illustrate, label, and talk about the objects, actions, and events both in the book and the child's life.

My Toolbox, by Diane Thistlewaite, Dorling Kindersley Publishing, 2001

Since many parents are involved in home remodeling or decorating projects during the summer, this is a fun way to include your toddlers and preschoolers. This is a puzzle book shaped like a bag with a handle. Each page has picture puzzle pieces of various tools and each piece is labeled with the name of the tool. Children can expand their vocabulary and match the puzzle pieces to real tools around the house.

Dear Zoo, by Rod Campbell, Simon & Schuster, 1982

The zoo is a popular summer field trip, and this book is a good follow-up to a zoo visit. This is a fun lift-the-flap book that is now available as a board book, making it more appropriate for toddlers. The story is about a child searching for the perfect pet, but each one the zoo sends is inappropriate for some reason. The book is great for teaching animal names and descriptive vocabulary, such as tall, grumpy, jumpy, etc. Preschoolers will like the predictable format, enabling them to "read" to story after the book has been read to them several times.

Spot Visits his Grandparents, by Eric Hill, Puffin Books, 1996

Visiting grandparents in the summer is fun for young children. The Spot books are always popular. The lift-the-flap activities that Spot does with his grandparents provide a means for the reader and the child to interact using the words and pictures.

Little Teddy Bear's Happy Face, Sad Face, by Lynn Offerman, The Millbrook Press, 1999

This is an interactive puzzle book for all young readers. Teddy Bear experiences many events during his day that make him happy, sad, angry, and afraid. Children place the appropriate feeling face in the board book puzzle slot to show how Teddy feels. This book presents opportunities to not only talk about what makes Teddy feel happy or sad, but also what makes the child experience different emotions.

Farmer Will, by Jane Cowper-Fletcher, Candlewick Press, 2001

Infants, toddlers, and young preschoolers will enjoy this book about little Will taking care of his special animals on the farm. Will has names for his toy and the real animals and likes to play games with them. This book is fun to read and combine with toy farm animals found in the story, enabling parents and children to act out many of the actions in the book.

What Do You Want on Your Sundae, by Debbie Palen, Price Stern Sloan, 2001

Children of upper toddler and preschool ages will love building sundaes with the puzzle pieces in this book. Parents can interact with the child in this rhyming book by labeling, sorting, and classifying all the different toppings for the sundaes. It is a fun book to read before or after a trip to the ice cream store.

Stella, Star of the Sea, by Marie-Louise Gay, Groundwood Books/Douglas McIntyre, Ltd., 1999

Preschoolers will love this story of Stella and her brother Sam going to the beach. Stella tries to lure Sam into the water by sharing some of the secrets she knows about the sea. The book is beautifully illustrated and presents opportunities to discuss the various forms of life in the ocean.

Molly and Emmett's Camping Adventure, by Marylin Hafner, Carus Publishing Co./McGraw Hill, 2001

Preschoolers who like to camp or even set up a tent under a blanket will enjoy this book. Molly and her cat Emmett find an old tent in the basement, set it up in the backyard, and plan a picnic. They are ultimately rained out, but not defeated, as they set up a new tent indoors. At the end of the story are ideas on how to plan a campout and other family activities related to camping.

When We Go Camping, by Margriet Ruurs, Tundra Books, 2001

This book is for preschoolers whose families go camping or who want to know what real camping is all about. The realistic, detailed illustrations depict a family's camping experiences as well as information about the natural environment. The wonderful illustrations present opportunities for children and parents to find many animals camouflaged in their surroundings, to talk about nature, and to find the squirrel and the various shapes hidden in each painting.
