This exercise is one of more than 50 exercises and supplementary exercises included in Speech to Print to give pre- and in-service educators opportunity to test their knowledge.

It is easy to demonstrate that many speakers of English have trouble identifying the discrete segments in words that constitute the inventory of speech sounds or phonemes. Try counting the number of speech sounds in familiar words and identifying the specific sounds within those words. This task will be easier if you try not to think about how the words are spelled.

Count the number of phonemes in the following words:

Compare notes with someone else who did [this exercise]. Did you make the same judgments? In what way(s) did you disagree? What would cause a group of educated people to disagree about the number, sequence, or identity of individual segments within English words? What causes the ambiguity of phoneme identity?
